Sound Design with GarageBand's Synths and Sampler
Move past presets and build genuinely original sounds using GarageBand's built-in synthesizers and the Sampler instrument.
Every preset in GarageBand's Library started as someone building a sound from scratch. This lesson covers the fundamentals of doing that yourself, using the built-in synths and the Sampler.
Synthesis basics, quickly
Most of GarageBand's built-in synths share a similar signal path, even if the Smart Controls look different from one to the next:
- An oscillator generates the raw waveform — the fundamental building block of the sound (common shapes include sine, saw, and square waves, each with a distinct character).
- A filter shapes its tone by cutting or boosting frequencies, most commonly a low-pass filter that controls brightness.
- An amplitude envelope (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) shapes how the sound evolves in volume from the moment a note is played to after it's released.
Starting from an init or blank patch (where available) and building up one stage at a time — oscillator, then filter, then envelope — teaches you far more about what each control actually does than tweaking an already-complex preset.
Shaping character with the filter envelope
Beyond the amplitude envelope, many synths also let you apply an envelope to the filter cutoff itself — meaning brightness can change over the course of a single note, not just volume. A fast filter envelope on a punchy bass sound, for example, creates a bright, percussive "pluck" at the start of each note that quickly settles into a darker sustained tone.
The Sampler: turning any recording into an instrument
The Sampler instrument lets you load your own audio recording and play it back across a full keyboard, automatically pitch-shifting it up and down from wherever you placed the original recording. This is how you'd turn a single recorded sound — a vocal chop, a found sound, a one-shot synth hit — into a fully playable instrument.
Record or import your source sound, load it into a new Sampler instrument track, and set the root note to match its original pitch so the rest of the keyboard shifts correctly relative to it.
A practical sound design exercise
Pick one preset you like, open its full instrument editor, and change exactly one thing — the filter cutoff, the attack time, the oscillator waveform. Listen to what changed. Repeat with a different single parameter. This one-change-at-a-time approach builds a genuine intuition for sound design far faster than randomly turning several knobs at once.
