Introduction to Automation
Record changes to volume, panning, and effects over time, so your mix evolves through a song instead of staying frozen at one setting.
A static mix — every setting fixed for the whole song — rarely sounds as alive as one that moves. Automation is how you make settings change over time without manually riding a fader in real time.
Turning on the automation view
Select a track and switch it into automation view (often a small automation icon or button in the track header). This replaces the waveform/MIDI view with a flat line representing whatever parameter is currently selected — usually volume by default.
Choosing what to automate
A dropdown or menu in the automation view lets you pick which parameter to control — track volume and pan are always available, and any effect you've added (like a reverb's mix level, or a filter's cutoff) usually becomes available too once it's on the track.
Drawing automation by hand
Click directly on the automation line to add a control point, then drag it up or down to set a value at that moment in time. Add more points elsewhere on the timeline and GarageBand smoothly ramps between them — this is how you'd fade a track in, swell a reverb before a chorus, or gradually open up a filter across a build.
Recording automation live
Instead of drawing points by hand, you can also enable automation recording and physically move a fader or knob during playback — GarageBand records every movement as automation data in real time. This often feels more musical for expressive moves, like a volume swell timed exactly to a vocal phrase.
Common, genuinely useful automation moves
- Volume rides — bringing up a quiet vocal phrase, or ducking a background part under a lead line.
- Panning automation — moving a sound across the stereo field during a transition or breakdown.
- Filter sweeps — automating a low-pass filter's cutoff to build tension into a drop or chorus.
- Effect send automation — increasing reverb or delay send briefly on a key phrase for emphasis.
Keep it purposeful
Automation is easy to overuse once you discover it. The goal is to serve the song — a handful of well-placed moves (a fade here, a swell there) usually does more than automating every parameter on every track.
