Flex Time and Flex Pitch: Fixing Timing and Pitch

Reshape a recorded audio take after the fact — nudge timing without changing pitch, or correct pitch note by note, without re-recording anything.

MIDI is easy to edit because it's just data. Audio is trickier — but GarageBand includes two purpose-built tools for exactly this: Flex Time for timing, and Flex Pitch for pitch.

Turning on Flex

Select an Audio track and enable Flex (usually a small icon in the track header, or a Flex option in the track's controls). This analyzes the audio and marks transients — the sharp attack points GarageBand detects in the waveform, like where each drum hit or syllable begins.

Flex Time: fixing timing

With Flex enabled, hover over a transient marker and you can drag it earlier or later — GarageBand stretches or compresses the audio around that point to match, without changing its pitch. This is how you'd nudge a slightly rushed drum hit back onto the beat, or tighten up a double-tracked guitar part against its original take.

Small, targeted moves work best. Flex Time can handle noticeable adjustments, but pushing it too far introduces audible stretching artifacts — you'll hear it start to sound smeared or warbly.

Flex Pitch: correcting pitch

Flex Pitch works on monophonic sources — a single vocal line or a solo instrument, not a full chord or a drum kit. Enable it on an Audio track and GarageBand displays the recording as pitch-shaped blocks, similar to a Piano Roll, showing you exactly which note was actually sung or played and how far it drifted.

Drag a block up or down to correct its pitch, or drag its horizontal correction amount to blend between "completely untouched" and "locked exactly to the nearest note" — full correction can sound obviously processed, so often a partial correction sounds more natural for a lead vocal.

What Flex Pitch is (and isn't) good for

Use it for: nudging a slightly flat or sharp note back into tune, smoothing out pitch drift on a sustained note, subtle corrective work.

It struggles with: heavily overlapping harmonies or chords, very breathy or noisy recordings, and extremely wrong notes — Flex Pitch corrects pitch accuracy, it doesn't replace a genuinely bad take.

A practical order of operations

  1. Record the best take you reasonably can — Flex tools are for polish, not a substitute for a solid performance.
  2. Fix any glaring timing issues with Flex Time first.
  3. Apply Flex Pitch corrections, favoring partial correction over full lock unless you're intentionally going for a heavily processed effect.
